Mathematical Words
This QQI Starter works on your mathematical literacy. You will be given a single letter and you must come up with a word that begins with that letter. Alternatively, you will be given a letter and six categories, and you must find a word for each category. There is a fantastic Maths Dictionary and a Maths Thesaurus for looking up words you don't know.

This activity can be an excellent starter to get students thinking about their mathematical vocabulary. Can be used at any age or ability. Get them to write their answer on a Mini-Whiteboard, and then to all hold them up together. Anybody with a unique answer, must tell the class what their word means to get the points. You might want to do 1 point for a correct word, 3 points for a unique word explained correctly.
