Graph Transformations 1
In the Activity below we have drawn the graph of y = f(x) and y = f(x) + b where b = 0 to start with.
Predict what will happen to the blue graph as we change the value of b.
Use the slider to adjust the value of b.
Describe in your own words what this function tranformation does.
Predict the coordinates of the minimum point of y = f(x) - 4.
Once you are convinced you know what is happening, move on to Graph Transformations 2.
Ideas for Teachers
Doing this at the front and asking them to predict what will happen first is essential. Ask them what will happen, and why they think that. Then give the students a chance to play with the activity, or show them what happens from the board. Once they have had a chance to work out what is happening, make sure you ask them to predict what a certain graph will look like (the one given above is a good example).
