Averages Activity
The below QuickQuestion Interface © is slightly different to the others. It generates a random set of data, and also the four averages of that set of data.
You have the usual choices over the data that is included, as well as whether you want 5 or 6 numbers.
By clicking on each number, you can make it appear or disappear, thus hiding different information.
Start by hiding the averages, and then calculating them from the data, before revealing them to check your answers.
Then you can hide other bits of information and work out what is missing.
What is the minimum amount of information you need to be able to calculate every piece of information?

Ideas for Teachers
This activity is slightly different from the rest. It is a very engaging starter, one that I have used many times. Start by hiding the averages by clicking on them. Produce a set of data, and ask the students to calculate the averages. This is the standard way of using this kind of activity.
However, to spice it up a bit, and really check their understanding, why not try something a bit different.

- Reveal the mean, and hide one of the pieces of data. Can pupils work out the missing data? What if youhide two bts of data?
- Reveal the median, and hide one piece of data. Can the missing piece be calculated? What if you have 6 bits of data?
- Hide all the data, and reveal all the averages. Can you work out the data from the averages? Do you need to know all the averages to be able to get back to the original data? Can you always get back to the data?
