Drawing Curves given by Equations
Below is a list of equations of non-linear graphs. For each equation use the pen tool to mark coordinates of points on that graph.
Hints
Now enter the equation of the points you have just plotted in the input bar at the bottom of the activity.
Check that all the coordinates you marked lie on this line.
Use the delete tool to remove the coordinates, and repeat the whole process for the next equation.
You don't have to stick to these equations: come up with your own and see if you can sketch them!
1) y = x2 |
2) y = x3 |
3) y = x2 + 2 |
4) y = x3 - 5 |
5) y = (x - 3)2 |
6) y = 3x2 - 7 |
7) y = 6 - x2 |
8) y = x2 + 2x |
9) y = (x - 2)(x - 4) |
10) y = x4 - 3x2 |
11) y = 1/x |
12) y = 1/x2 |
Ideas for Teachers
Get your students to investigate how to draw graphs of non-linear functions using this activity. It is suggested that you give some equations to your class to suit their needs (different equations to different students is a great way to differentiate). The questions provided are a range of possible equations you might consider, but are not meant to be exhaustive. This could be a great homework, where you set equations for them to investigate, and they have to show you screenshots of the work they did (with working in their books).
