Battleships 2
This Activity is kindly taken from Mr Barton. It can be played as a game in pairs, or by a single player.
In the activity below, there are 13 ships, labelled A to M.
Take it in turns to launch missiles at these ships, and whoever sinks the most ships is the winner.
To sink a ship, your missile must pass through the centre of the ship (that is the point).
Firing a missile is easy:
 Ensure you have Slow Plot turned on
 Double click on one of the missiles
 Type the equation of the line you need
 Press enter and watch your missile wreak havoc on those ships!
Afterthoughts
Having played the game a few times, try answering these questions:
 Which line passes through the most ships?
 What is the fewest number of missiles you need to sink all the ships.
 Can you always sink at least two ships with a single missile?
 Try moving the ships to create the best position for the ships (the positions that will take the most missiles to hit them all).
 Try moving the ships so that you can use as few missiles as possible to sink them all.

Ideas for Teachers
This is a great game for consolidating knowledge of equations of lines, and for getting the pupils to think in a bit more depth about the properties of straight lines. You could use this as an activity between pairs, or you could project it on the board as a starter for the whole class, and ask them what is the best starting move.
