Find the Lines 1
In the activity below, there are 4 points, labelled A, B, C and D.
Each point is attached to an invisible line, and you have to work out the equation of the line it is attached to.
Grab each point in turn and drag it around.
What do you notice about the coordinates of each point?
Can you come up with an equation for the hidden line that the point is on?
When you think you have a correct equation:
Afterthoughts
Can you find more than one equation for each point? To check each equation, double click on the dashed line and type in your new equation.
This activity lets pupils practice their skills at identifying the equation of lines. It can be used as an introduction, with the focus being what is the relationship between the x and y coordinates. Or it can be used to consolidate work on y=mx+c. Either way, make it clear to the students what they are doing, and let them have a go themselves.
