- We only use 10% of our brain
- You learn better when instruction is tailored to your preferred learning style
- Co-ordination exercises, such as BrainGym, help connect left and right hemispheres
- There are left brain and right brain people
- Children are less attentive after sugary snacks
- Learning problems cannot be remediated by education
- The frontal lobes which is linked to conscious thinking, and working memory
- The parietal lobes deal with unconscious processing of information from the senses
- The occipital lobes (or visual cortex) which deals with processing our vision
- The temporal lobes (or auditory cortex) process auditory information
- The hippocampus is involved in embedding memories in the cortex
- The amygdala is linked to emotional responses
Building new knowledge requires activity in the frontal lobe, the working memory.
Consolidation connects this activity to other areas of the cortex
The different areas of the brain are very interesting, and it is useful to be able to talk about them in connection to the learning process, but for me the big takeaway this week is the Engage, Build, Consolidate model for learning. I am looking forward to learning some more about this, and its applications to my teaching
